Dr. Alison Aune, professor of art education at the University of Minnesota Duluth, will present a talk on her Minnesota-Swedish inspired paintings. She will show her interpretations of sydsvenskt bonadsmåleri (figurative paintings), dalmålning (floral paintings), and mixed media pattern paintings.
As a fourth generation Swedish-American, she has created these paintings to honor her maternal immigrant ancestors and to preserve her heritage. She will present her work as a living cultural art form that is rooted in traditional Swedish folk art traditions that celebrates the intersection of art, craft, and tradition.
Gothenburg was once the leading harbour for Swedish emigrants seeking a new life in America. The tradition of Swedish Bonads travelled with them and is re-discovered and interpret by following generations.
