Gothenburg city festival invests in emerging music talent

As rehearsal spaces, live music venues and community meeting places become fewer, emerging musicians are finding it increasingly difficult to reach new audiences. At this year’s Gothenburg city festival, the next generation of artists will have the opportunity to perform on several festival stages, connect with audiences and develop their musical talent.

Performing in front of a live audience is an important part of developing as a musician. However, for many, the step from the rehearsal room to established stages can be a big one. As opportunities to perform live and connect with others in the music community become fewer, important spaces for growth and collaboration are disappearing. Music can provide a sense of belonging and a powerful form of self-expression, while also helping to build confidence and support wellbeing.

That is why Gothenburg city festival is shining a spotlight on emerging musicians this year through a number of initiatives across the festival. At Grönsakstorget, Musiklabbet (The Music Lab) takes centre stage, giving talented young people from Gothenburg the opportunity to perform in front of a live audience. In partnership with Studieförbund och Fritid Centrum the initiative creates a platform where visitors can discover new voices while artists gain experience performing on stage.

At Kungstorget, Stage For A Better Day, the Tim Bergling Foundation’s national music initiative for young people aged 13 to 25, brings together emerging artists from across Sweden. Through open applications, coaching and opportunities to perform on established stages, participants can develop in a safe and supportive environment alongside others. The initiative is based on the belief that music can strengthen mental wellbeing and create a sense of community, while giving young people the opportunity to express themselves creatively and grow through their passion for music.

Students from Rytmus Music Upper Secondary School will also take part in the festival. Along Avenyn, they will perform intimate and stripped-back street music sessions, while at Kungstorget they will take to the stage with a varied music programme in different ensemble formats. The GP Stage will also showcase some of the most exciting new names in music, as Göteborgs-Posten highlights artists who are preparing to take the next step in their careers.

Through these initiatives, Gothenburg city festival aims to create more pathways into the music industry and give emerging artists the opportunity to develop, gain visibility and reach new audiences. At the same time, festival visitors will have the chance to discover the stars of tomorrow, today.
